Salsify Product Detail Insights

Salsify’s PXM platform allows manufacturers to manage their entire digital shelf of products across multiple channels. There are many types of analytics that customers follow when tracking their product’s health. Depending on the user’s role, some metrics are more important than others. After doing research, it became apparent that customers preferred control over how metrics were presented based on their roles.

Design an analytics widget system that was flexible and responsive to allow various types of customers immediate access to their products health.

My Approach

The product detail pages on Salsify were outdated, presenting challenges with usability and scalability. VOC data pointed to opportunities to rethink rethink these pages from the ground up. I conducted user research by interviewing customers to understand how they used these pages, what metrics were important to them, and how they view them. Through this research, I realized that building a standardized data visualization dashboard was not enough.

Customers desire different metrics depending on what their role is. For example, an inventory manager was less concerned with MAP violations, but more concerned with inventory status. While merchandisers preferred to have real-time access to their product’s pricing across retailers.

I decided to approach this project by focusing not just on the design of the widgets, but the ability to customize the dashboard. Before this, there was no way for customers to view product health unless they sifted through reports in a different section. I felt it was necessary to surface this information at a product level, and allow customers to build appropriate dashboards for multiple roles within their organization. An inventory manager could add widgets to the dashboard that supported their role, and save that view for themselves (or to share). These views allows powerful flexibility for different roles across their org.
